Welcome!
Whether Roman or Wizard, I make math fun!
Hello! My name is Mr. Kelly Baum-Sehon, National Board Certified Teacher, and this will be my thirteenth year getting to teach at Belle Isle Enterprise Middle School, and I couldn't be more excited!
I have my teaching certifications in Secondary English and Language Arts and Mid-Level Mathematics. I use what I've learned with both of these degrees to add a story-telling element to the learning of math by having my students adventure in the wilds and civilizations of "Mathyca," defeating all sorts of "problems" that they enCOUNTer (okay, I'll stop now!).
But teaching is not the only thing I like to do. As anyone can tell you, I LOVE attending fitness classes each week with Ms. Le in order to stay active. I also enjoy going out to eat, usually with friends and family, followed by a relaxing evening of reading, online video gaming, or crocheting random things for loved ones. In fact, I have received a Master of Advanced Crochet Techniques and Stitches from the Crochet Guild of America (it's a real thing; Google it!)... which shows you just how ridiculously nerdy I am!
My favorite colors are blue and gray because they are very calming. My favorite foods include Asian, Mexican, and Italian... oh, and almost anything fried, greasy, and generally unhealthy (I like to think doing fitness classes means I'm allowed to eat whatever I want). I REALLY love Starbucks (like, an unhealthy amount), and you'll usually see me sporting an iced beverage every Friday morning as my end-of-week treat. My favorite time of year is winter because of the cold weather, the holidays, and the ability to wear sweaters, scarves, and gloves. I love cats, especially my precious Sullivan, Drake, and Samuel because they're so cuddly and affectionate.
But one of the most important things to know about me is that I am unconventional. I like doing things in fun, creative ways that will stick in the memories of most people, particularly my students. I have two goals in this math class:
1. My students need to deeply learn the math I teach them (no surface-level understanding here)!
2. My students need to enjoy math classes (math is meant to be loved)!
My philosophy: Never strive to be mediocre. Mediocrity requires no effort. Instead, strive to be brilliant, not because you want to be better than the person next to you, but because you want to be better than you were yesterday. If we are all the best at what we do in our own unique ways, then together we can achieve even more than we ever could alone!
